Understanding Placement Cell at IIT Guwahati
Let’s understand the hierarchy first
Placements are handled by a team called the Center for Career Development (CCD). There is a head and 2 coordinators, one for placements and one for internships. Under the three heads, there are student coordinators/ overall placement coordinators (OPC) selected among students through tests and interview screening. These are the core team that manages, decides and plans out the entire placements.
Each student coordinator has an associate placement coordinator (APC) assigned to them (shadows them and helps out closely).
There are multiple departments, schools and centres in IITG. Each has Bachelor's, Master’s and PhD students. These students nominate a Departmental Placement Representative (DPR), to coordinate between the students and OPCs.
Now that the hierarchy is set, let’s understand the timeline:
Placements are a crucial timeline for students, there are process stages. It starts with the pre-placement talk which occurs somewhere in August, followed by the CV submission in September/October. One by one the declaration of companies happens during mid-October and the shortlist of the task/ test is followed in November. All the final interviews are scheduled in December. By the 1st week of December, all the major placements are done for phase one, meanwhile, phase 2 starts in January.
let’s understand the roles and responsibilities:
OPC: Management and Leadership skills
- Selected from the final year B.Des/B.Tech or final-year M.Des/M.Tech
- Understand the previous process and plan out and execute the upcoming one.
- The planning includes the process, timeline, policies and portal. The team collectively works on the placements portal, brochure designs, and forming policies for the companies and students appearing for both internships and placements.
- They connect with multiple administration teams for student CV collection, data verification and internship/ placement fee collection.
- Connect with the companies and invite them for internships and placements.
- Conduct tests/ tasks for the students.
- Manage the logistics for the process.
- Connect with the PR teams (news channels).
- Update with the other IIT placements live stats.
APC: Associate Placement Coordinator
- Selected from the pre-final year B.Des/B.Tech and first-year M.Des/M.Tech
- Closely work with the OPC.
- APC should be carefully elected, as they form a possible team for their upcoming placement team.
DPR: Requires to be a proactive and effective communicator.
- Selected from the final year B.Des/B.Tech, final-year M.Des/M.Tech and a PhD student with a minimum of 3 years completed.
- Constantly connect with OPC and students.
- Communicate with classmates and collectively bring their requirements/ issues to the OPC.
- Help out the OPC with their (DPR) respective department-related data.
- Connect with the faculties, alumni and industry to seek placement opportunities.
- Coming up with the strategies with the OPC for increasing the placements.
Design Placements at IITG
Design works independently compared to the tech placements at IITG. The OPC along with the DPR creates a website for the design students which consists of the programme-wise profiles (CV, portfolios and area of interest) of the students participating in the placements.
Design students are required to have a mandatory portfolio to participate in the placements. Hence the placement team must communicate to students early regarding the CV and Portfolio dos and don’ts.
Once the students apply for their preferred companies, shortlisted ones get the task (timeline: 2 hours to 5 days) meanwhile for tech, they appear for multiple test rounds. The final selects appear for the interview.
Please Note: The above information is a piece of general information and is liable to change according to the demanding situation.
I hope this helps for the upcoming years of placements :)
